DIY: Extending the Creative Suite
Curious about writing your own scripts to generate artwork and this is all new to you? As I mentioned in the show, if you’re interested in extending the Adobe Creative Suite applications beyond the capabilities of Actions, here’s what I recommend: 1) Start with Adobe’s Configurator. It’s a wonderful tool for creating your own toolbars into Flash plug-ins. Here’s some more info on how you can download it, etc.: Adobe Configurator and beyond… 2) Next up is Adobe’s ExtendScript Toolkit. You probably have this application installed on your computer. Get comfortable with the JavaScript reference guide associated with the Adobe application you are interested in controlling. When you have created a few scripts, you can then combine these scripts with the Configurator so that you can launch them from your Flash plug-in and integrate it within your custom toolbar; and finally 3) to have nearly complete control over extending the CS applications requires some experience with Adobe Flex Builder, Adobe SwitchBoard (connects the dots between AIR applications and Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) and/or Adobe PatchPanel (connects the dots between Flash plug-ins that run within Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) – the last two are SWC libraries available for free from Adobe Labs. If you’re comfortable with writing code in Flex Builder, definitely check these tools out – they’re creatively empowering. If you prefer to simply take advantage of tools that other people make, stay tuned and I’ll post them as they come in.
